Quarter Cut | Bourbon Barrel Aged Wine | Cabernet Sauvignon | California 2020

bottle of wine on the table

This Sunday was special.

Not only because our friends came over to hang out.

Not only because we destroyed a delicious charcuterie board.

Not only because we played “Saboteur” board game.

But also because my fiancé brought home a bourbon barrel aged wine.
As the subtitle of this blog says, this is a completely subjective view on wines. And mine is – that bourbon or whiskey aged wines tend to be usually a bit stronger in taste, a bit more aromatic, and the flavor more overwhelming than if the wine was not aged in one of them. I tend to greatly enjoy the first glass but the second one sometimes comes with a bit of difficulty.

This time, however, I was pleasantly surprised. Quarter Cut | Bourbon Barrel Aged Wine | Cabernet Sauvignon | California 2020 started smoothly and sweetly and continued in this way through the first and second glass. This wine seemed to be lighter than most bourbon/whiskey/rum barrel aged wines I tasted in the past – and as much as I enjoy deep, rich, complicated tastes, I embraced the softness and sophistication of this one. It was a perfect accompaniment to a great board game and a variety of meats and cheeses, although it would stand strongly all by itself.

Color:

Deep burgundy red, almost opaque. Warm and a bit purplish notes in the shade. Not much left to desire here.

Aroma:

Balanced aromas of cherries, vanilla and bourbon.

Structure:

Starts sweetly, with notes of cherries and subtly approaches you with vanilla. A bit short finish but, thanks to that – amazing drinkability!

Overall Quality:

The bourbon barrel is almost underwhelming, since I am used to a bit stronger tastes, but this wine is very drinkable, very approachable, non-offensive and definitely a great choice for someone who is starting their journey with bourbon barrel aged wines. I wish the finish was a little bit longer but regardless – this wine remains aromatic and delicate, sweet and balanced. Delicious.

Total Rating: A
